I wanna make a cake - look like a golf course

Can anyone give me any ideas?
I'm pants at baking  but want to try and make a cake that looks like it has a golf course on the top, for my boyfriend's birthday next Friday.

I guess I could do a bit of a basic cake, and then put some icing on with green food colouring on?

Any ideas where I could get little flags and men with golf clubs, or anything like that?

Thanks
Yc

Make a large square or round cake, and make another one for chopping up. Cut out a few odd shaped pieces out of the spare cake (try and round them off as much as possible, and stick them to the top of the large cake with buttercream (fill the cake before you do this lol), and then cover the entire cake with some green ready to roll icing. Alternatively, you can make these lumps out of ready to roll - just stick them on the top of the cake and then cover them all with more icing ... this might actually be an easier way, and less time consuming than making another cake! The lumps and bumps will help the cake to look more like a golf course.

Then just use your imagination ... make some flags out of paper stuck to toothpicks, and stick them in 'holes' made by either putting a blob of black icing onto the cake or by making a small indentation into the icing (be careful here!) and either leaving it plain or filling it with icing. Sand bunkers can be made out of brown sugar - carefully pile some of this into a space created by one of the 'lumps and bumps'. You can make some small patches of rough grass by pushing some of the ready to roll icing through a sieve. Do this over some paper or onto a plate and you'll get a little clump of grass which you can carefully lift off and stick to the cake with a little dab of water. This also is a nice way of decorating round the bottom of the cake where the icing meets the cake board - it hides the join and you can put a few sugar flowers here and there to make it look a bit more interesting.

You can make golf clubs/a bag etc but it will be tricky - your best bet is to go to a cake decorating shop and see what they've got, there's usually a fair bit of golf stuff. Wilton do small theme packs with most of the stuff you'll need, like mini balls, clubs etc.

    Hope this helps!

You can also make "grass" by mixing some desiccated coconut with green food colouring.
  • Or keep it simple with just a flat putting green - a chocolate coin for the hole, flag and some spherical mints or lollies as golfballs. That or go to M&S. :D

Have you tried going to the library? There will be numerous books on cake making and cake decorating to give you inspiration and pointers on technique.

Alternatively, have you thought about getting an edible ink picture printed on a cake? OH on the golf course?

For the grass try using dessicated (dried flakey) coconut died with green food colouring, you can get ti to stick down by coating the cake with a bit of apricot jam...it works out much cheaper than icing!

For flags could you stick some paper to cocktail sticks? For men with golf clubs I think you would need a cake decorating shop or else have a hunt on ebay as there is loads of cake stuff on there.
