I wondered if Bernard Matthews has considered this as an alternative industry to enter...? I know it's turkeys, but detritus is detritus.

I saw a bit on one of the 'car programs' about chip fat.He took a regular diesal car and filled it with veg oil and it ran fine.At one point he went into a chippy and asked if he could scrounge some old oil as he was running low!
I think you have to add something to it in cold weather to stop it getting too gloopy.
I'm really tempted to try this myself every time I shell out £50 to 'fill her up'!0 -
I know of someone who runs their land rover of chip pan fat from one of the local chippies. No modifications were neccessary. I'm not sure whether its as efficient as diesel or anything but it certainly smells interesting when it goes by.
i ran my peugoet 106 m reg on pure cooking oil from lidals for about 3 years,:p only 35p a litre then, although you do need to mix some diesel with it and in the cold/ winter i used to put in some white spirit as well to prevent the oil from getting to thick for the injectors. it actuall ran better during those 3 years than anyother time. i have seen on certain websites that you can get a fuil warmer for the winter, but i could not be borthered with that, its a shame it had to go to the great scrap yard in the sky as it was hit by a bus whilst i was out shopping, still intresting smells from the exaust:rotfl:0 -
I was emailed by someone who told me that using the chip/veg oil and white spirit mix WILL damage the engine. IN fact this is the email I received from an individual:"Nearly all Diesel fired vehicles will be quite happy running Proper
BioDiesel fuel, with no alterations or modifications.
BioDiesel is NOT just veggy oil and solvents. or mixtures, it is
chemically and physically quite different from veggy-oil although Made
from it.
Veggy-Oil and solvent blends will damage your Engine and, or fuel-system
--if the vehicle hasnt had quite extensive modifications carried out by
a Competant Technician first. There are Very few 'Competant Technicians'
with the experience or knowlege to modify the Modern Common-Rail type
Diesel engine.
Due to the logistics, it would not be viable to supply you from our
headquarters in Swansea South-Wales, due to the cost of transport.
There are is apparently a supplier of BioDiesel fuel in Lanark. Check
out https://www.biodieselfillingstations.co.uk
Please confirm with the supplier, that the Fuel IS Actually BioDiesel,
and that it conforms to the European Standard EN14214. IF he says his
fuel is to BS EN 590, Walk away, as its most likely just veggy and
parafin which will damage your car!"
Just thought I would include it FYI.

Just had a telephone call from Vauxhall this morning and they've said that BS EN 590 is OK to use in our car without any detrimental effects foreseen. And they recommend to use no other type.... but they would say that anyway, wouldn't they......?
However someone did tell me that this BS EN 590 can simply be Veggie oil and White Spirit mixes.... it is a quandry.

Dont forget to register with customs and excise if you do decide to use veggie oil or make you own bio-diesel as there are plenty of places around the country where they are stopping vehicles and dipping tanks at the moment.
BTW i have been using straight vegetable oil for about 2 years now with no ill effects on my hilux surf, used in ratio`s from 15% veggie in cold weather up to 50% in summer, the other 50-85% is diesel0 -
HI Hawkwind,
Thanks for the info. So how do you make your blend of fuel? Do you mix it at home with purchased pertodiesel?
Cheers
