Is this some kind of fraud?

Options
Hi,

Bit worried. My son was recently offered a part-time job in a warehouse type environment over Christmas. He doesn't have a contract and they keep pushing back his first pay day (from the end of Nov to the end of Dec so far) but the main issue is that they refused to sort out a p46 for him or accept the one he printed out for himself. When he asked 'Well, how will the tax office know I've been working here?' (lol, naive little soul) he got the reply 'That's the point.'

They also have not taken his bank details yet and say they will put his first pay into his friend's bank account (friend already works there and told him about the job). Seems to me that will mess up the friend's tax as well (assuming he's not also off the books).

They owe him about £80 so far (NMW) but I'm starting to doubt he will be paid and it might be better to cut his losses now.

He will be doing any leg-work/ talking to them himself btw. I'd just like to know whether this is as dodgy as it looks!

My son has also started a job and, like you, I had concerns until they were proved unfounded. However, this is off the scale and you have a right to be concerned.

The chances are that he will not be liable for tax anyway and it always mystifies me why employers do this(how does the employer obtain tax relief?) As for putting the net salary into someone else's bank account ??????
  • It's 15.5 hours at NMW so he wouldn't be taxed atm, but if he gets a better job (one is on the horizon) he might end up liable.

Presumably his friend who works there is paid on time - or perhaps not? The fact they want to pay him his pay into his friend's bank account sounds odd though.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • He's decided to quit now anyway, apparently called them this morning! They reckon they will still pay him into his friend's account for the hours worked. We'll see.

And his friend waited weeks to be paid at all. If nothing else they're blatantly taking advantage of people's desperation for work.
