    Not a great deal really.

Charities are obliged to PAT test any electrical item and are not really keen on taking any low value electrical items bar some that take white goods.

My point was not about the charities, but about society replacing working tele's.

Point of note, it's not really a hardship to PAT test something if you have the equipment.
I'm sure there are parts of society that would welcome a working CRT as opposed to none at all.

Probably one small indicator of a society prefering to upgrade / replace rather than maintain and keep.

Of course there is a cost with keeping up with technological advances and one which we seem as a country not to necassarily able to afford (the lifestyle)

I can see why charity shops would turn them down, big heavy things, that take up quite a bit of space, and need testing. Most charity shops are staffed by volunteers, many being retired, who may or may not know how to use the Pat tester, and many of which would not want to be shifting round big heavy objects.

We got rid of a big old CRT telly on Freecycle, and had 10-15 people email pretty quickly asking for it, so there was a demand for a free telly, even an old CRT.

We have become a society where things are more disposable than maybe they once were, but big old CRT tv's were stupidly big and very heavy. For many people with modest sized houses they just took up too much room.

I recently gave away a load of stuff to a charity called Instant Neighbour.
They do sell some stuff cheaply but they also help out the more needfull and deliver to those in need.
It was run by a Polish man ;)

I also saw two "youths" wearing designerish jeans and jacket going in as I was leaving (not sure what they wanted)

I found a rather good use for old CRTs, CCTV monitors.

Chuck it all in the loft and it will work for the 10 minutes a year you use it forever more.

These types of re-use places seem more obvious over the last couple of years. Perhaps the overall trend is reversing or maybe they were always here but in more tucked out of the way places.

It could just be that with more empty shop units these organisations are able to take advantage and get more prominent positions.

What happens when you fill the loft :)

We have been clearing ours our recently and the amount of crap I had tucked away that had been too good to bin at the time.. It was quite nice shifting lots of it down to the tip.

The town we live in is small and reasonably affluent. We have a couple of charity shops.

Had a leaflet pushed through the door, to day, for a new trader who is willing to buy good clothing and paired shoes at up to 50p a kilo. It isn't a sales outlet so I wonder where it is going? Markets elsewhere in the country maybe.

A couple of shops, British Heart Foundation being one, seem to like electrical items including CRTs and will even collect.

I have noticed that item sin them seem to be get "expensive" compared to a few years ago.

My wife was hoarding a load of baby clothes with the intention of car boot selling them.
I told her it was up to her but I would be just as happy giving them to charity.
In the end she sold them to one of those companies who pay by the bagload.
Thing is, she wished she gave them away in the end as there was some good quality items in there and they were picked up also by some (apparent) Polish people.
She wondered if they did end up in a car boot by someone willing to do so.

**NOTE** I am not racist, just pointing out there seems to be a lot of work carried out by Polish nationalists and I wonder whether there is enough effort put in by people looking for work or why they are chosen instead.

Do crt tvs use more leccy than more modern lcd and especially led ones?

Our second last tv in the guest room is a crt from freecycle :)

However given how small modern houses are I can see another big advantage of a led on the wall over a crt in the corner.
    I think....

Modern LED (LCD screen) do use less, for a given screen size, but we like bigger screens.

Older LCDs and Plasmas used the same or more.

Replaced a 26"" CFLLCD with LED and it uses about 1/3.
