Council Tax-Liabile to pay for housemate?

Hi Guys,

I graduated from Uni in February and after I continues sharing the apartment with a colleague of mine. I was out of Job until May and asked the Council to give me a council tax benefit for that period. However they have denied the claim, and the council tax is being summoned presently. When I called the call center they were extremely rude and has guaranteed me that they will take the whole sum of £328 from me.

However, my housemate left the country without paying his share and when I conveyed the message to them they said that I fully liable to pay the council tax, as they are out reach. Please advise me on what to do as I am not in a position to pay the full amount.

Secondly will this affect my credit score in any which ways?

From February you are both jointly liable for the whole amount and the council can pursue whichever one of you it thinks it can get the money from.

The council don't to have to cease action for anything other than full payment but many will make an arrangement if you offer a suitable amount.

Not unless they later went down the bankruptcy route.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Thank You for the reply. But there has to be a way I can dispute this as i didn't sign any contract which states that I will take care of his financial liability. Can I dispute this?

Sorry, I kind of missed you on the credit score part.Defaulting on Council Tax will not affect my credit score?

No - its not a matter of contracts, its a matter of legislation - joint tenants are jointly liable for council tax.

It wont affect your credit rating unless the council used bankruptcy action against you.
