Annual Update on our Debt Free Journey

Hi All

Well, it's that time of year again when I post a little update on our journey. Long story short - because I handled all the finances and was the main earner I managed to hide the fact that we were around £65K in debt from my husband. I told him in July 2010 after my world was turned upside down when my Mum had a very bad fall and as she was suffering from dementia there was little option other than for her to go in to a home. As her and my Dad had been married for 60 years it meant me travelling 400 miles up and down the M6 every fortnight to support him and her. I couldn't take the stress and so confessed everything to my husband as I couldn't cope on my own.

We were very lucky in that we can manage to pay this debt off and have been doing so now for the last 2 and a bit years. My update last year was that we were down to ££43457.20 :T Our progress this year hasn't been as great as we expected however several things have gone wrong which needed sorting....an unexpected tax bill ( Im on PAYE so I have no idea how that happened apart from changing employers in 2011) and a collapsed garage roof both contributed. But back to the main reason for my post ...our debt now stands at........

£28366.38......woohoo!!

We should now be debt free in around 16 months :T However that date is open as we are both very much aware that things never work out the same as they do on paper but we're getting there and loving the fact that we actually pay for things now as opposed to just getting them on credit :)

    Thank you :)

I keep seeing the word 'empowered' on this forum and this is exactly how I feel now....absolutely empowered. We make the decisions about affordability rather than that decision being made for us because of credit. We don't always get what we want but we are very happy and for that I thank my DH who had the strength to stand by me and the faith in us that we could do it.....together :)
  • Oh well done!!! :j:beer::T you have done fantastically well!!!!!!
