Signing off JSA before staring new job

I've been claiming JSA since being made redundant a few weeks ago. I've now found a new job- hooray - but it doesn't start until January.

I have no intention of continuing to look for work during December so am planning to sign off.

Can I do this without going to the JobCentre (please say yes?) What date will I be able to claim up till?

I've just done this today (new job starts Monday). I may be a bit different as I received no JSA (drawing Army pension), but I just phoned em up. I think that you claim up to the day you phone em up/start work.

If you sign off, you wont get your NI credits up to you starting work.

It's important if, in a couple of years that you have full years of NI if wanting to claim benefit. You could of course buy the NI yourself during the coming weeks. Which would be advisable.

    Congratulations on your new job....
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

If you do not wish for any more JSA nor any of the perks for formally signing off like 4 weeks run on of Housing benefit then simply do not turn up to the Jobcentre and your claim will be closed 5 working days after you fail to attend. It will be closed from when you last signed on.

If however you do want JSA etc up to the day before you start work then you will need to attend the Jobcentre. Ostensibly you do still need to be actively seeking employment but if you have anything in writing - email etc - confirming a start date then any reasonable adviser would just sign you on.

At your last signing before starting work complete the section in the ES40 ( little signing on book ) and hand it over. That gives authorisation to close your claim formally and you receive all the JSA up to the day before job start and the HB payments.

If you wanted you could ask about money for tools, travel to work until you get paid, work clothes out of the Flexible Support Fund ( FSF ). Have to ask whilst on JSA and before you start work.

    Good luck

Didn't know that bit, but then I signed on on Friday, formally offered the job this Monday, start next Monday. Lass on the phone at JCP just took all the details and told me that was it
