Maybe we should think like governments for the best results and set up a thinktank to decide what the HP&E thinktank should be for.

It'll be ignored though. I offered, on these very pages, to take an afternoon off and sort the deficit before teatime - not heard a squeak from the treasury.

A think tank about think tanks ? Sir Humphrey would be proud of you.

I don't think it's findings would necessarily be completely ignored, but there may be limited appetite for a statutory underpinning.

Frankly I think that the idea of a 1.5 million target dished out on a population basis only is so unlikely in the real world as not to be worth time and effort in considering it.

    Again, suit yourself.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

Why is there only one monopolies commision? Maybe we need a second one to investigate why.:D

Actually should there be competition in other areas?

Germany had two foreign offices that used to run rival embassies competing to win foreign trade and deals.

Iran's got two military forces competing to defend the country.

Some countries had two capital cities (e.g South Africa). The tories once proposed that the UK should have two capitals, with Edinburgh being the other one, but they dropped the idea.

Some countries have two heads of state e.g San Marino and Andorra. (Mind you, Switzerland doesn't really have a proper head of state at al).

I maybe am not a think tank type of person ..
I need context ..Really ..For a government in this country to be able to inform by dictate that we build 1.5 million homes in 2 years ...Then something either really bad or something really unexpected has happened.
If this was being done just because house prices were too high ...Then I could only assume Castro had become dictator.

so in that context ..nothing more needs to be discussed ..If you can make one order ..then that is how you get everything else done ..Not enough money ..order it to be made available ..
The only thing needed thinking through is how soon ..with a dictator at the helm ...would property prices crash to an affordable level anyway ..meaning no need to build ..
