Can't get a current account

Hi, I have a recurring issue that I can't get a full bank account, with any bank. They say it's because I'm failing credit checks with Experian and I have negatives coming up.

I have no CCJs but Experian keeps saying I have. I have tried to sign up to their trial, but every time they want to send me something through the post, so I can view what has been put against me. The problem is, no letter ever comes. I have contacted Experian, but they say my account hasn't been set up.

I have never had anything that could give me a bad credit scoring as I never have had a contract phone or a credit card or anything like that. I am only 19. It seems Experian can say what they like and not let the person be able to know exactly what they have 'done wrong'.

Anyone else had this issue?

Basic bank accounts aren't reported, so if you've never had credit, there's no reason that you'd be on their radar at all. When banks look you up, the computer is looking for the best match it can find among people it actually knows about, and is finding somebody else and reporting them..

Experian can't send you details of somebody else's defaults. It would be a criminal offence if they did.

It's a basic design flaw in their stupid and misconceived operation. There's nothing you can do about it. There's probably nothing they can do about it.

Write to your MP, the FSA, the OFC, and Santa Claus. Threaten to sue. Jump up and down and scream. That'll probably do the most good.

Some are. I've had basic accounts with Natwest, RBS and the Co-op all of which were reported to the CRAs

Apply for your statutory credit file through the post, this will let you see what's 'against' you. You need to do it for all three CRAs so will cost you £6 in total.

Whilst you may be able to get a basic account, you need to understand if there is adverse data on you.

The only information about current accounts that banks can register with the credit reference agencies relates to the overdraft element of the account, which is the credit bit. Basic accounts don't have an overdraft facility so can't be included in your credit report.

I had a basic Lloyds cash account for a while, with no credit facilities whatsoever, and it shows on all 3 of my credit reports.
