Do pension contributions lower income for Pnl Contribution calc?

For personal allowance calculation is taxable income considered net of pension contributions? EG If you have taxable income of £150k in 12/13 but make contributions into a personal pension of £50k do you get the personal allowance of £8105 because taxable income has been reduced to £100k. Many Thanks in advance for any pointers to the HMRC guidance. Stuart
