I was in NY this year, and I cant think of anything that might help your task. It was through work, so it was all last minute for me. Its an amazing place and when I go for my birthday I would do it differently.

The best Map I got was one that the concierge gives you at the hotel. The is an iphone app, if he has a smart phone... then you could get that one. Lots of free WIFI. :)

I would look for up and coming shows you might want to go and see. Defo go to a show on broadway...

    New York Yankees

Bagels - you could make him one for his breakfast :)
There are also amazing Pretzels that you get on stands, and dont forget the famous hotdogs....

    Yellow Cabs

There is a discount card you can buy. http://www.newyorkpass.com

What about some American chocolate or sweets? If you don't have anywhere near you that sells them, you can get some on Amazon.
  • a nice "big apple" in the bottom, download "new york, new york" for him.
Can yo buy some tickets online for an attraction we used : http://www.attraction-tickets-direct.co.uk/new-york-attraction-tickets earlier this year when we went to florida excellent service they do some attraction tickets for new york. Also you could get tickets to central park zoo or new york aquarium.

    Memory card for his camera?
Photo album you can fill with pics when you get back?

A New York Moleskin (see Amazon)- great little tool to take with you full of street maps, subway map and space for you to keep a diary of what you've seen whilst there. It's not a guide book, but highly recommended.

Also have a look at restaurant.com for discounted restaurant vouchers. We use them all the time for New York and save loads. Just use a New York zip code and pay using Paypal, they are then emailed to you.

I have seen small new york calander for £4.99 in papyrus, illuminate and calander stands in the middle of the malls. Failing that you could get a new york cheesecake...yum.
  • I did a treasure hunt around the house for my three kids to guess we are taking them for New Year , their clues consisted of Alicia Keyes song - Empire State of mind, an, apple, Virgin atlantic logo, a packet of lucky charms breakfast cereal (amazon) a Yankees baseball cap and a Stars and Stripes t shirt. -has been the highlight of my year seeing their faces when they guessed and they all started crying ....priceless
  • This, perhaps?

Ties in with the New York theme, as well as being Christmas.

    And there's a vinyl version for 49p/£2.03 with p&p
  • a playlist (CD or on mp3 player) of American songs e.g. that Alicia Keys song about New York or just by American artists. Basically, something to listen to while on the flight
