Our local county court bailliff is a nice homely looking man. The Rossendales bailiffs all look like psycho bodybuilder serial killers. IMHO.

Except the last one I got. He was getting on a bit, and a bit confused, and half way through his appointment I had an urge to phone the local old folks home to see if they'd had an escape...
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

There are a few types of bailiffs:

    Certificated Bailiffs
A certificated bailiff is a bailiff certificated in the County Court under "The Distress for Rent Rules 1988". These rules are specifically for Commercial rent arrears or Council Tax, etc. I believe they need to renew their certificate every 2 years.

    Private Bailiffs
Untrained people with little or no knowledge of bailiff law. They are usually employed by local magistrates courts.

    County Court Bailiffs
They are employed directly by the County Courts for enforcement and recovery of debt judgments in the County Court.

Sheriffs Officers (no not Robin Hood!)
Now called High Court Enforcement Officers. These people are employed by the High Sheriff (a political post), who in turns appoiints a Sheriff (usually a firm of solicitors). The Sheriff then appoints a bailiff company as the Sheriffs Officers who will then enforce and recover all judgments from the High Courts and certain large County Court debts.

    Hope that helps
