  • I think the historical deeds would now belong to the people who own the property.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

We bought our house in 1997, mortgaged with the Nationwide, we have never had our deeds, i just presumed we would get them on completing the mortgage re-payments....Now i'm slightly worried, should we already have them?

    Any help appreciated.

If your house was already registered with the Land Registry in 1997, the historical deeds would have belonged to the person whose name it was in when the law changed so that hsitorical deeds were no longer required. They are of no 'use' to anyone anymore - we were told that we could throw ours away! We have not done so, but other people may have disposed of theirs.

Is it just me who finds it slightly disturbing that you were actually hoping that they had messed up so that you could "take pleasure in watching someone squirm in their seat" and now you're disappointed because you can't have your fun?

    This seems seriously twisted.

You are not alone. I found this thread incompatible with the spirit of mse.

We had a bizarre thing with ours when we moved 2 years ago. Part of the paperwork written in copperplate. I dumped them in front of the mirror and DH noticed that they were now legible! Not sure why/how they had been copied in mirror image though!
