Home cooking - Is it cheaper?

As I'm on Maternity Leave, and my little one is 4 months old and will be weaned in a few months, I want to get in the habit of home cooking. However - Every recipe i've looked at has a million herbs, which average out at about £1.50 a small jar in Tesco. Is it really cheaper? The type of meals I want to make is: Bolognese…

I think one of the important things these days which is often overlooked in home cooking is the cost of fuel. So if you're making a casserole, spaghetti bolognese, chile con carne, etc. always make a double batch as you will be saving the cost of fuel, as well as having another coonvenient meal in the freezer.
