my brother has done a similar thing. Last Christmas, for the first time in over 20 years, he spent only what he could pay for from cash/bank account. If he had to use his credit card to pay for something, he went without. His kids weren't impressed but a couple of weeks later they had forgotten all about it.
He did the same with a holiday later in the year.
He says it's become "addictive", he really needs to convince himself now before he buys something - spending is more real when you hand over hard cash or see your bank account balance drop within hours.
