MSE News: Supermarkets agree to fairer pricing

  • I find Tesco by far the worst for this. The annoying thing is they are so expensive. I've ditched our Tesco West Durrington for the new Asda ferring, as the staff are firendlier, the prices are fairer, and the quality is better. Well done asda!!! :j

I saw some chicken breasts for 'half price' for £4 for 4 breasts. Who would buy 4 breasts for £8? I have never seen these at full price.

People see the 'half price' label on the pack and think what a good deal.

Sainsbury's does 500g pack of organic chicken thighs and drumsticks for £4 and personally I think skinless chicken breasts are horrible - might as well buy Quorn.

Just realised Middy will know this, working for Sainsbury's <blush>

I've just been pricing up some beers as I've got couple of £3 off £20 coupons to use in Sainsbury's and found this:

    8 x 500ml bottles for £10

    2 x 4 packs of 500ml bottles for £9

At least the dearest box of 8 bottles is limited to 6 packs - they'll only rip you off to a maximum of £6. :D

Whatever the price/offer label says, decide for yourself if a product's actually worth that amount of money it took you to earn. If it isn't, don't buy it - whatever they say.
You're not stupid enough to buy something just because a supermarket tells you it's a good deal, are you? You've received an education and you're perfectly capable of working this out for yourself.
Take control of your spending - decide, and spend only, on what you actually need - and don't be taken in by marketing gimmicks.

What bugs me is when an own brand product is the same in all supermarkets ie a tin of organic tomatoes or a bottle of olive oil because that seems less like competitive pricing and more like a cartel.

For the last year or so now i have not done a full shop in any store, previously i would write a list and buy everything in one store.
Now i spend no more than £20 in any store by picking out offers and reduced items and going in with coupons. I also go to the market and poundshops.
Supermarkets really want customers in there to do a big weekly shop as thats where they'll make the profits. I cherry pick from each store, unfortunatly this takes a lot of effort and lots of storage to stock up on good offers but i do feel this is the way any savvy shopper needs to be to get the best deal.

What makes me laugh is that the guidance roughly reflects the pricing legilsation that we used to have but got rid of. Also, what is the point of supermarkets promising to do something that they should be doing anyway under current legislation? No amount of rules will work so long as the execs of these companies sit on government advisory committees.

Best thing to do is look at the price it is being sold at, ignoring any previous price of offer, and work out whether it is worth it.

What about Wickes' half price kitchens, which is just a farce.
Has anyone ever paid full price?

I saw a book shelf in Home Base for £80, and I just knew that it was ridiculously high, and got it for £40 a few weeks later.

If they really want to interfere with false pretences, why don't they set up a national register of cosmetic surgery, where the surgeons have to register photographs of before and after. Selection of mate for the production of offspring is a fundamental life decision. You only find out you married a dud when the children grow up ugly, and it's too late to ask for a refund.

With you on DFS - you can add Thorntons to that too these days. Totally unbelievable pre-discount prices.
