Has anyone knitted an Aran bobble hat?

Not really sure where to put this, hopefully someone on here can answer.

I want to knit an adult (ladies) bobble hat with a turn back cuff/brim. I have some aran wool and found a free pattern on the 'net which said to use 5mm needles and 65 stitches, knitted in Fisherman's Rib, and that the hat would fit 41-61cm head circumferance. After 62 rows and a quick try it was obvious that it wasn't going to stretch to an average adult lady's head of 58cm.

I undid it and started again with 74 stitches on 6mm needles and again it's still too small.

Long shot but has anyone knitted an aran bobble hat in rib? How many stitches and what size needles did you use?

  • Can you give a link to the pattern you are using? That might help us to give you an answer.

The link above to Ravelry patterns needs to be filtered - aran is a weight of yarn as well as a style of knitting so a search for 'aran hats' throws up everything. The hats listed are made in all sorts of yarn from cobweb lace to extra chunky!

    Thanks both.

I've had a quick look on the Ravelry site and from checking out a couple of cuffed beanie hats it looks like I might just need to use more stitches. I might need a looser method of cast on too, I only know the basic two needle method where you put the RH needle between two stitches on the LH needle (I think that is the cable method????). It's been a long time since I've knitted anything :rotfl:.

Here's the link for the pattern I've got.

Don't worry, I managed OK to find some knitted with aran wool.
