  • Just keep at it! Try and save on the little things and do your best - it will be hard for a while but once you get there it will have been worth it. Buy cheaper food in bulk etc. rather than more expensive stuff at one time. Good luck!
  • Just a small present for children this year, £10 each, maximum. Your two year old will be v happy with a second hand train set from eBay. I know, I have a 2 year old myself and she loves it. It's Brio style but came from Ikea.

You need to stop the childminder and go to free childcare groups instead, your loal children's centre runs them. Alternatively, your wife needs to work those two days to cover the cost (shift in local cafe, McDonald's, shop or whatever. There are loads of ways for kids to socialise for free. I pay for two £60 for ten weeks classes for dd but they arent essential and I'd cut them if I needed to.

The government funds free hours in nursery from 3 because that's when it's important for development. Before that kids play alongside rather than with each other.

You've been spending more than your SOA otherwise you wouldn't be in this mess. Go back through your statements and bills and start a spending diary. You need to find out where else you are leaking money as well as cutting back on clothes etc.
I'm a qualified accountant but please make sure you get expert advice as any opinion is made in a private capacity.

The misses NEEDS to know about the payday loans! She can't be expected to understand how pressing the need for drastic action is without the facts!

What about the stocks and shares? I would sell those and use to pay off the payday loans if possible.

you have some tough choices ahead of you and tbh I think the lightbulb is only flickering at present. Your son might like the nursery but it is a luxury yo can't afford. Ditto presents.
Is your OH looking for work? Part time evenings etc when you can do some childcare or if DS really is Keen on the nursery, she ought to look for a job and put him in there while she earns

As for presents, dunno how i'm gonna pay for xmas but this is the present list so far aside from the obvious:

    Mum
    Dad
    Grandparents
    Brother
    Sister
    Brother in law
    Sister in law
    4x neices/nephews

    Thats just my side!

All these people can be removed from your presents list. Just explain you have overstretched yourself at the moment in your new home and you can't afford pressies this year, and you don't expect anything from them either. They will understand - I know because I've done it, and so have lots of others on this forum.

I agree with what the Cat says, you need to tell her about the PDLs - they are your problem. Your total debt isn't bad, but you need to reduce your spends quickly to clear them first. Stop trying to deal with it on your own.

  • Maybe you could make some Christmas presents rather than buying them? Maybe a nice chutney or some festive biscuits? You can knock a batch up for next to nothing and personally i think the time and effort you spend making them is far better than just going into a shop and buying something!:)
