Natural / organic mattresses

Wondered if anyone knew where I could look for reasonably priced (as possible!) mattresses which are natural or organic (I'm after a single) or if anyone had any general advice about them. Thanks :)

You mean a "palliasse" ? :rotfl:
  • Google them, organic mattress will bring up plenty of hits. Made from natural latex, organic wool and organic cotton. Slightly more expensive... But getting more popular. :)

There are loads on the market, but what do you consider to be a reasonable cost?

I'm guessing your'll be looking at £600 plus, all depends on how much organic or natural you are after? Some natural fillings or 100%?

  • hi there,

I bought a futon mattress (from the Futon Shop!) back in 2000. It was ex-display and cost £375 for a king size one, it was the thickest, most layered one available.

The futon lasted a long time and was surprisingly comfortable in summer (cool) and winter (toasty).

The outside was cotton ticking material and the inside looked to be layers cotton kapok and wool fibre/felt.

Sadly, it did develop a rip, so we could see the stuffing inside but we did get a good innings from it. It lasted a good 11 years.

We replaced it with a posh climacool memory mattress which is IMHO not half as good and cost about treble the price.

As the futon mattress contents were natural fibres, we ended up composting the filling bit by bit and it broke down very nicely into compost at our allotment! So quite an eco ending rather than sending it to landfill....:T

Worth checking out as a possible alternative? They are great as you can roll them up, unlike more structured mattresses!

  • Found a link to the Futon Company. These look different to our old one...cannot see what thickness they are...

"Handmade fresh every day in London UK workshop, using mixtures of 100% cotton, recycled fibre fillings, foam, latex and pocket springs".

Prices start at £129 +£15 delivery for a single

    Ooh like Swallows and Amazons!

Would hay be more comfortable than straw? (I realise comfortable is a comparative term in this case!)
