Nationwide Application, Assessing Income?

OK, credit checked on first application, mortgage broker said there'd be no problems as she'd run everything by Nationwide and they'd given the DIP. Valuation came back as satisfactory, so we were hoping for just a straight formal offer.
Today however we get a text saying Nationwide are assessing our income.
What does this mean? They knew the income from the application so why are they assessing it now?
OH started a new job a month ago, would this affect it even though they knew he'd only been there 2 weeks when the application went in? Previous employer he was with for 11 years so he's not exactly unstable career wise if they check.
Humph. Just when I hoped things would go smoothly :/
