How to stop paying emergency tax without P45?

in Cutting tax
I started a job five weeks ago and got paid a week ago (paid monthly).
I have had to pay emergency tax.
I have not been able to give my new employer my most recent P45 as I can not get hold of it.
How can I stop this emergency tax for future pay checks?
Also, can I claim this month's emergency tax back already or should I wait?

If you didnt have a P45 when you started your job your employer should have given you a p46 to complete. Ask for one as soon as possible, they (or you) should be able to download one.
Your tax will be sorted out and any refund will come automatically through your payroll.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

I assume that when you refer to emergency tax you are talking about either BR or 0T tax, emergency tax is 810L month 1 basis. As has been advised you need to fill in a P46 which will get you onto the emergency tax code so that the monthly tax you pay will be about what you should pay, but this will not result in any adjustment to tax allready paid. Any overpaid tax will not be repaid untill the tax office advise a cumulative tax code and previous pay and tax details to your employer. The P46 is just the start of this process.0
