Can UK debt be recovered in Holland/Belgium?

Does anyone know if a UK credit card debt can be recovered in mainland Europe? About 4yrs ago I left the UK but before I did I paid my debts in full, the only money still owing in my name was about 3k which was my ex-girlfriends share of a joint credit card account, I was the main cardholder and she was the supplementary. We were on quite good terms before I left and she agreed to continue making the repayments but 6mnths after I left it seems she stopped paying which resulted in letters being sent to my previous addresses.

I've been in Asia since then and not heard anything but will soon return to Europe and imagine my UK credit rating will have been affected by what happened, will banks in Holland or Belgium be aware of my UK credit rating? If the money is now with a debt collection agency could opening a bank account there alert them to my whereabouts? Could the amount still owing be 'sold' to a Dutch/Belgian collection agency?
