Tax Rebate?

Sorry not sure if this is the best place to ask but know that mse'ers will be able to answer my question.

I recently went back to work after being out of work for 6 months. My first two weeks pay (paid weekly) I was stopped emergency tax, they now have my tax code but this tax has not been rebated. Do I need to do something to claim this back.

Would really appreciate your advise.

Whether you get a tax rebate after being on emergency tax would depend on your taxable income while off work eg taxable job-seekers benefit. Having said that job-seekers is usually lower than tax allowance so would have expected some sort of rebate proberbly. Are you sure you were on emergency tax, this would be 810L week 1 basis in your circumstances, is it possible that you were on BR or 0T tax code and you are now on the emergency code?

To check can you advise gross and tax for each payment along with the tax code and basis (usually shows after tax code on payslip) and from your last payslip the gross and tax to date figures.
  • I was on OT tax but last two weeks 810L I only work part time 17.5hrs a week so nowhere near tax threshold. Before being out of work I was part time only worked April - May so haven't earnt much this year.

So have I been paying emergency tax? Was stopped £30 tax for first two weeks but now only £6 tax.

You are now on the emergency tax code no rebate will be made untill you are on a cumulative tax code.

What were you doing before this job, were you getting any job-seekers if so have you recieved a P45?
Have you filled in a P46 I would assume you have as this would proberbly be what got you onto emergency tax?
  • I was getting job seekers and have now passed this on to new employer. So hopefully this will get rebated in time.

    Thank you for your help

If this has a cumulative tax code any overpaid tax will be rebated when your employer applies the P45. You can check on the part 1A that you kept, a cumulative code will have no X at section 6 and the figures will be in section 7. If there is an X and figures are only in section 8 then the P45 has an emergency tax code and you will have to wait untill HMRC advise your employer of your tax code and previous pay/tax figures before any tax adjustment.
