  • I just made a fancy spreadsheet for this challenge and my targets each month. Should I really be this excited?

I hope everyone has a great Christmas and a fruitful 2013 :money:

Making the last of the plans to make the challenge as easy as I can. Have looked at the bank accounts and made a few changes to increase saving and gain from the interest. Also to save it rather than spend it. I hope I'm ready to reach the target!!!
  • Please may I join? I am really going to try and get £3000 saving this year That is going to be my minimum and anymore is a bonus.

Hi, could I join please? I wanted to do this in 2012 but had a crappy year. Hopefully 2013 can only get better. I'll go for 8k please. This is incredibly ambitious but nothing worth doing is easy, surely?

Just worked out that I have saved £12,005 in 2012, when I hadn't signed up for the challenge this year! So I know I can do it, I just hope the pressure doesn't get the better of me for 2013!
  • Can I sign up for the full 12k please?
  • Hi

Am I too late to join? I've never been over here to the savers side, have just finished paying my debts :)

Please can I aim for £4000?

    Thanks x
I have enough money for the rest of my life... as long as I never have to pay for anything again!

What do you guys think about me spending 6 months savings on braces... it is completely a vanity thing, my teeth didn't bother me a huge amount until my mother mentioned it and said she could pay some. Unfortunately her circumstances changed so she can't afford to chip in. Are they worth £3k when I have to be completely financially independent? I have £7k in the bank, job is fairly stable... I wanted to hit the £10k mark to feel secure and then aim for £15 or £20k for a house deposit.

Trixie, I had this exact thought but about laser eye surgery not braces, my thoughts were that I could spend £3k on myself and feel a little bit better, or I could save that £3k and put it towards a house, which will give me even more security than I currently have in rented and if I still want it then, I can then save up the £3k for the eyes. In my opinion, vanity comes after life goals.

I want to agree with both of you. :)

I had laser eye surgery 10+ years ago and I have absolutely no regrets about it. It has been so much more comfortable without glasses & has saved me a lot of money on opticians/glasses costs - more than the cost of the surgery. So I can see that making a big investment for health/self improvement can be worthwhile.

But I agree with Kerri that thinking about overall life goals is very important. I think you are the only one who can decide whether having braces would make such a difference to your life that it would be worthwhile spending your money on that rather than saving or putting it towards something like a house. But if I were in your situation, I would do some research and try and find other people to talk to who've had it done. I'd see whether they look back on it as a good investment or with some regret. And I'd also give myself ample thinking time before any big decision.

    Put me down for £20k.

Don't be surprised if i spend it all, i'm saving to buy a building site and theres lots of reall cheap ones in auctions at the moment, we have £10k savings now (well not really we lent the inlaws £4k but we will have in the new years) so once we have £20k (think easter time) we will start looking at auctions and local sites properly.

I will probably be spending some of mine along the way too. Going to re-do the bathroom this year with some of my savings as it has been needing done for a long time. I am also generally decorating the house (all except the kitchen which needs a bomb put under it - will save for next year!) I am aiming to get a good emergency fund set up first though. Then I will save for the bathroom.
