These helpful posts made me think about (1) how important it is to know the areas where you are over-spending and how that knowledge can lead to setting mini-goals (such as, limit eating out to x times a month, source more economical skin care, etc, etc) that can be key to saving. I'm going to give some thought to what my mini-goals can be for the new year.

    (2) That it can be really encouraging to have a savings purpose in mind from the outset. I think mine was too vague at the outset of the 2012 challenge ( I had in mind that I would roll the money over into long-term savings). But I think it will help me to shape my goal up into something more specific. I'll have to give this some thought too.

Thanks SnowGo, I think the areas that I need to work on are so easy to identify because I fritter away SO MUCH on them that there is no doubt that there is room for improvement... £150 on 4 skin care products is ridiculous for example!!

What do you guys think about me spending 6 months savings on braces... it is completely a vanity thing, my teeth didn't bother me a huge amount until my mother mentioned it and said she could pay some. Unfortunately her circumstances changed so she can't afford to chip in. Are they worth £3k when I have to be completely financially independent? I have £7k in the bank, job is fairly stable... I wanted to hit the £10k mark to feel secure and then aim for £15 or £20k for a house deposit.

Trixie, I had this exact thought but about laser eye surgery not braces, my thoughts were that I could spend £3k on myself and feel a little bit better, or I could save that £3k and put it towards a house, which will give me even more security than I currently have in rented and if I still want it then, I can then save up the £3k for the eyes. In my opinion, vanity comes after life goals.

    Hi Kerri,

I'd have to disagree with you if it were about laser eye surgery... I'd get it done without thinking twice if my prescription were stable! It's a big immediate spend but it'd then stop all the little spends on Optician appointments, new glasses, contact lenses etc... Maybe save about £5k for some security, then save for the surgery, then carry on saving for the deposit?

I'm still torn - security comes before vanity, but in all likelihood I'll still have enough money if something bad happened even if I do spend £3k on braces... I'll keep thinking about it :)

Thanks for this, I have achieved quite a bit in the past couple of years with my other half but we need to reign ourselves back in and knuckle down for the deposit saving. As some of it is in Savings Investment Plans and Sharesave schemes through work most dont mature until May 2015- I think this gives us quite a bit of time to plough more money away and make sure we are in a good position for our deposit!.

Good luck to everyone, New Year, New Start :A
    First home- Oct’16 until June’21: £170.995- Overpayments made £13,784 (25% extra!).
New forever home- Sep’21 £309,449 @ 2.05%. Plan to clear it before 30 years!!!!!!
