Well done Peonie  and everyone else.

I'm here to update for June - £1210 for me this month.

More excitingly, it was my DHs 40th birthday at the end of May and we went to Edinburgh for the week and managed not to put anything on the credit card while we were there. All spends came out of money that was just in our current account. I think it's the first time ever I've managed to fund a trip away just out of money that's there!

Of course, without that week away my amount for June would have been higher but I'm still 65% of the way there with 50% of the year gone so all good

Fab savings everyone. I really want to get my backside in gear.
I've had to dip into my savings again for some scarily large car bills among other things. It is a bit deflating to be going backwards!

I'm looking to secure some full time, permanent work asap so I can start some hardcore saving. Got a clearer vision than I've ever had about what I want to save for.

Good luck to everyone with this month's challenge. :)

    Hello all :) June update!

My new total is £68,181, so for the first time ever I actually spent more (£77 more) than I earned last month!!!

I know why, though - I booked a holiday for next spring, bit of a blowout but hey. You only live once, and I've had a hectic few months, so needed something to look forward to.

Must get my head down and focus again, or I'll never hit my target! :o

You are still less than £7,000 away from your £75,000 target though Tara so I would t get too down just yet!! Any idea when you are going to get on property ladder? The interest you will be saving will be unreal.

Inspirational Tara, well done! I am sure you will be at your target very soon.
  • My monthly update for end of June - £1500 added to savings. New total £2500. Hoping to add a wee bit more before my wages come in at the end of July. Front page already updated.

Thanks to SF for keeping the thread running and the totals updated.

Some fantastic totals out there, keep saving everyone:T

Changed my total to £3,500 as I had less than I thought to pay out this month. Still got my MOT so may need to adjust, but find it unlikely there'll be much wrong with my car. Famous last words maybe... we'll see :p

  • wow, TARA747 that is a fantastic amount saved well done!

Nice to see lots of positive updates here, well done to all savers it is not easy to do.

I have just sat down and done a projected savings plan until the end of the financial year as I really want to fill both mine and hubby's isas for the year again but not sure if I will be able to. At least I have a plan. I reckon if I plan to save rather than just saving whats left at the end of the month I should do it. I am seeing my savings as a bill to pay (to myself).

I slipped up with my free fivers from Hal!fax this month as my DD didn't go out in June so I missed out GGGRRR! I have done another couple to go out from the accounts so it shouldn't happen again but I count the tenner into my savings pot.

Started doing the lottery again grand sum of £1 per week on a lucky dip, never win a sausage! But I do it as part of a balanced low-high risk portfolio ;)

Finding that I must do something with my weekly shop as it has crept up and DD1 has come home from uni so seem to need more food in... Already use A!di (and the vouchers) also L!dl, take packed lunches and flasks and make all my food from scratch so not sure where to save. We do eat lots of fruit and veg and food is a big thing for us so its important to have something nice to eat, I'll have to sit down and look into it but food has gone up a lot as well as petrol, gas and electric, everything really!

I have been doing extra hours too and working a few extra shifts for the agency which isn't fantastic pay but welcome all the same.

Worst case scenario is to increase my hours but I really don't want to, pushing 50 and job is tiring as on my feet all day.

Positive side...I have most of my xmas pressies sorted as I took advantage of the Pandora sales recently and have been busy knitting aran jumpers and socks for everyone! Onto the last jumper now. DD2 is 18 next month and have got her pressies sorted thankfully (all sale stuff).

I have had a lot of expenses though this year which I didn't forecast such as having to have varifocals instead of plain lenses which came to £600+ for me and hubby even though we got a free eye test at tesc0 and 2 pairs each as they had an offer on for a free pair. Also
new cooker and laptop, washer repair, tyres...it all adds up.

Anyway, we are a lot better of than we used to be so thankful for that, its just that when we were first married and the kids were little we never had any money and I used to go out to work at night and not sleep during the day! It was hard and I feel better psychologically for having some money saved up, not because I am a materialistic person but because I hate that feeling of living on the edge not knowing how you are going to fund the next 'emergency' be it needing a new pair of kids shoes or something breaking down... I think that's why I feel motivated to save.

One question... when do you stop saving? I don't think I will ever feel safe enough to stop, I suppose when you are old and stop working but then you might be too worn out to enjoy it! Dilemma! It raises all sorts of questions about the meaning of life, what do others think?

  • Love your post Desperate Housewife. I feel much better too at having some cash put away in savings. This year I had to use the bulk of my savings to 1. Attempt to fix my old car and the 2. Buy a new (to me) car after the old car was still a problem. This ate into most of my savings so I have now set up an account specifically to save for new cars as well as having my emergency savings and then a long term savings plan.

I have never thought about when I would stop saving, especially since I have only recently started saving on a regular basis:eek::eek:. I suppose now that I have started I would like to keep it up. Although once retired I don't know how I would feel about this - I will cross that bridge when I get to it I suppose.
