My savings on my online saver were just shy of £2.50, but they pay this into my current account (can't remember why I set it up to do that, but hey ho). However, Martin's ISA show lastnight encouraged me to do the math on what I'd earn if I moved it into the ISA today with the new allowance, and I calculated a return of more than £10 interest each month... My maths is not the greatest so it will be interesting to see if I did that right when the interest is paid out on it!

It also means I need to completely reconsider the way I manage my money, previously I never came anywhere even close to having significant savings, or to coming close to the limit for the ISA allowance so I always used that account to move money in and out of as and when needed. Now I need to leave what is there alone which only leaves my online saver, which I lose interest on if I withdraw money at any point in a month... this could be a good thing as it might be an incentive to not take money back out, but I'm thinking I need another account entirely to use as a buffer. I have a habit of stashing lots of money away into savings in the hope that I wont need it, and because I'm less likely to spend it so readily if it's not so easily accessible, but still need the flexibility of being able to trickle some of it back into my current account if/when needed.

Thanks MissyD. It's certainly useful to see the different types of accounts in play. I definitely need to get me an easy access account, just as a temporary holding place while I establish what needs to go where. The main onus is on not having it in my current account where it can be spent all too easily, the interest rate on it isn't really an issue as whatever I don't spend will make it's way into a higher paying account.

Oh my goodness, this is the first time this year that I have posted - I have been saving though - just lack of time!

Anyway, have managed to save so far £1,085 out of my £3,500 target. Hopefully will be half way soon. I'm really pleased.

Will be popping by a lot more frequently now I am back in the swing of things.

    Thank you SF.

The OH has caught the savings bug. He's always believed he hadn't got anything spare to save, so I worked out what he should have spare and he realised he must be spending his money on sod all. So this month he did the whole paying himself first thing, and has managed to save over half his pay PLUS the money saved on taking his loan repayment break (will never happen again, but as mentioned, he thought he had no spare money, so was taking them to pay for birthdays and stuff). I am so, so pleased, and he even just uttered the words "I could buy that, but I don't want to break into my savings" - yay!

I've put loads (for me) over into my savings, hoping to keep at least £450 there, this is the first month of proper saving :D

Personally I would save for these separately from your "no touching savings" or longer term savings (not necessarily locked away without access)

That way it's easier to manage and see what your saving for what.

Also, if you are saving for things like car insurance or new laptop e.t.c, it might be worth making regular savings in a regular savings account with a 'decent' interest rate % for these items but making the purchase's on a 0% credit card - credit history permitting and you don't already have debts with interest accruing to pay off!
Have a look here for information, but we warned you have to be VERY ORGANISED to do this without you being worse off!

Be sure to use the Tool: Pick the right type of card;)

Yeah, i'm aware of these techniques, but we just aren't organised enough. We have decent accounts and stuff, but are paranoid about credit cards and always pay off the entire balance.
  • I have had a wee dip into the savings today too. Why do I always get so far and then have a blow out? Oh well, I didn't do too much damage (I hope).

Still got to see how much fixing the car will cost (it's booked in for next Sat) and after that I will get back on the straight and narrow - funnily enough this will coincide with me going back to work after my Easter holiday! I do less damage when I am working all day:rotfl:.
