Mortgage refusal, working away from home

Had a mortgage refused today at 90%LTV because I will be working away during the week from the house that i am trying to buy. They said i could no longer have the offer which had already been approved as it would not be my main residence even though it would be used as my only property and my only registered address? I am in the forces and have a room in a barrack block that they said would be my main home? Has any one else come across this issue before? They did call back and said they would offer me 75%LTV after a lengthy argument about traveling sales people and businessmen staying in hotels etc. Im just amazed that they can do this!
