Selling jewellery

I have a tiffany engagement ring and wedding band to sell. I haven't got a clue who to approach to sell it and how I know if I'm being ripped off with what they offer.
I know what the insurance value is, but I am guessing recent second hand jewellery is worth significantly less, especially as it was bought in Tiffany, I am guessing it was an over inflated initial cost.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am in desperate need of raising enough money for a deposit.

  • Names like Tiffany bring out the buyers on eBay in droves, especially if you have authentication papers.

Why not have a look at Tiffany jewellery on eBay (also in the and see the sort of prices it's bringing in. If you do decide to sell on there, I would block sellers from abroad and make sure that you post SD so that you're covered if it gets 'lost' in the post ;)

    Good luck :)

I let my mind wander and it never came back!

I've got the certificates, receipts, original box and bag.
I'm a bit scared of selling something so valuble on Ebay. Paypal offers good protection for buyers, but there is a lot less protection for sellers. I know to avoid foreign buyers (sold phones before that strangely people always wanted them to be sent to their son who happened to be working is a distant, far off land). I just don't know how to ensure I'm not giving it away.
That said I'm equally dubious about finding a jeweller who isn't going to screw me on value either.

  • I sold some jewellery in London- I went to that big antiques centre place, lots of little shops, behind Oxford Street- sorry can't remember the name, but I reckon you could find it if you google. I went into several of the high end jewellers in there and asked them how much. I then went for the one I liked best as all the quotes were very similar! You could also do the same in Hatton Gardens.

Try and do a bit of research to find out what a fair price is for the item. Now this fair price might not be something you are willing to accept.

Firstly what did it cost when you bought it? This will give you a ball park figure of what it is 'worth'. Then as someone else suggested look on ebay on completed listings for what similar items have sold for recently. You can make a reasonable assumption that your item will go for something similar, or you always list as a buy it now (or best offer) so you dont get unlucky and someone gets it for 99p!

Then if go to a few jewellers and see what they would offer for it.

Depending on what the answers compared to your expectation will determine whether you wish to sell it or not. If you are happy then sell via the route that gives you the best price.
  • is it a diamond engagement ring?

does your certificates tell you everything about the ring?

  • Just remembered- it was Burlington Arcade I went to, all the jewellers were really helpful.
