virtual Christmas presents!!

Hi
In the spirit of the following statement:
Due to the economic climate, the light at the end of the tunnel has been temporarily turned off!
I have informed my teens that they will be receiving virtual Christmas presents...ie a lovely wrapped box with a picture of what they would like with a promise that we can buy it in the January sales!!
Genuine genius or mean mummy?? They will still get stockings and small presses...just the larger main present.
I think its a great idea but some of my girlfriends think its just wrong. Going to do it anyway. Lol!

  • my mum did this one year, printed off loads of tokens saying i owe you...(they were all clothes) and i could go to the christmas sales and get the clothes i wanted. i loved it, if they know they are still going to get it and they have other little things to open on the day i don't see the problem. being teenagers they should understand why and be happy that you still want to get them a main present but don't want to pay more than you can afford.

I actually think it's a good idea. As teenagers they should be old enough now to understand the reasoning behind it and as long as they still have small things to open and they know they are getting the item then I'm sure they'll be fine with it.
Me and OH used to do this - we'd get a few stocking fillers for the day and then go for a shop in the Jan sales. Often meant we could afford things that we'd be struggling to get before the day - and for the sake of a few days it's not really a big deal :)

I'm torn, I like the idea and it makes perfect sense, but I would be worried that they would be disapointed and you would feel awful!

For some reason, the IOU tokens sound a lot better than the picture on a box concept!! You could make them look very nice with some card, embellishments and a bit of crafting effort.

However, I do agree that teens are old enough to understand financial constraints.

I think it's a great idea, but only you know how well the kids will take it.

What if the larger main present isnt in the sales? I think its an easy option to buy in the sales, but to me, Christmas day is the 25th December.
  • Brilliant idea!

Growing up we always had a 'January sale' present & even now in my 30's my parents still do it! I also do the same for them & my husband.
