Recommend an ankle support.

I have sprained ligaments in my ankle. I asked the doctor whether an ankle support would help & she said yes. However, she didn't say which ankle support to get.

Can anyone recommend one please?

I used one last year. I cannot remember the brand I got, but I got it in Boots. It was quite expensive (£20s). It had a firm bit that went around the back of the ankle and then thick velcro straps criss-crossing across the foot. It was the only one that worked. I got the bandage/elastic types first, but they were useless.
  • Thanks Hermia.

    Was it comfortable?

If you can get one which wraps around and vecro fastens these seem to offer more support then the pull-on versions IMO. Boots have both, the velcro versions do cost quite a bit more but they do a better job at offering support, reducing the inflammation and therefore reducing the pain.

Ibuprofen and other anti inflammitory medications (and apparently some anti-inflammitory foods) can all help with the pain as well.

Just a note though to say not to wear support wraps as you sleep or you will wake up with a numb foot! When you sleep your body does a lot of it's recovery work and it needs you to rest and allow any circulation to be as unrestricted as possible.

Specialised sports shops also sell ankle supports and could also be worth checking there first. Take a tape measure with you as many require the size of your ankle for the correct fit.

    Thanks Hermia.

Yes. Most of it was adjustable. I would wear a sock under it and it didn't rub my foot at all. I actually wore it with lace-up ankle boots (it was winter) and it was fine. After a day at work I would get home and feel my foot needed some air, but it didn't bother me at all otherwise. I definitely felt supported.
  • Thanks Hermia & Jennie.

I have been using Voltarol Emugel & it has been helping. However, I think an ankle support is also the way to go.
