Advice on direct debits

Hi,
I am paying an extra £5 a month to Virgin Media for not paying via Direct Debit and they are just an example as I don't use Direct Debits for anything apart from the mortgage.
The reason for this is because I pay our bills according to whenever money goes in there. My husbands pay date fluctuates a little whereas mine is on the 25th of each month. However, I have childcare fees coming out of my wages so I don't see much of a wage so we rely on when hubby's wage goes in, benefits, survey payments and ebay sales  go in. As the last 3 are not set on any particular date I can't set dates for direct debits either how can I make the saving on paying bills by direct debits.
I'm not familiar with dd's so please forgive my ignorance.
