Halifax Online Mortgage Amount

I have recently started a mortgage with halifax and have it online with next to my bank accounts.
The figure changes each month - goes down just after a payment is made then goes up about a week before the next payment is due.
There is no more information about the mortgage on there i.e. capital repaid so far etc.
Can anyone explain this figure?

Interest will be charged to your mortgage account once a month. Hence the reason the balance increases.0

When the amount outstanding increases, that means they've added the interest due.0
