Hmm, glad some are doing well.

My 1987 Sun Alliance (as was) policy, due to cover a modest 16.7K, matured in November at an even more modest 9K.

Which was not unexpected, and not actually a problem as I had had compensation for mis-selling and have covered the loss in other ways.

A later endowment I had with Standard Life was surrendered a few years ago as it was so poor it was laughable.

I'll never trust a bank (or in both these cases the Halifax Building Society as was) for long term investment advice again.

But they havent have they? Forget the Zombies....what have the likes of Aviva, Prudential and Standard Death returned 87-12, which coincidentally was the same as my endowment matured this year, which was £41pm, matured at around £30k.

I have a Standard Life policy due to mature next year. The projected return equates to around 5%/annum. This will give a shortfall as it needed to produce 7.1%. SL got spooked with the stock market crashes around the millenium and as a result put a lot more of its funds into fixed interest. This provided stability to its funds but meant it lost out on some of the stock market recovery since then (the FTSE100 total return index over the past 10 years has returned 6.7%).

That said, the SL returns have been better than my mortgage rate so I'm still better off than if I had taken out a repayment mortgage, but I have needed to make further investments to cover the shortfall.
