Is it worth shopping around for a vet?

Having decided to get my finances in order, was feeling positive, then realised dog is due her booster and kennel drops next week. Phoned the vets, will be costing £45.00

Is it worth shopping around for vets or do they mostly charge the same prices?

Would appreciate any pet money saving tips too :o

    i know in my area theres not that much difference in vets prices, give or take a couple of pounds
  • There are some minor variations in Harrogate, but most are about the same, HOWEVER - in harrogate EVERYTHING has a 10-20% invisible numpty tax on it, so it would be much cheaper for me to go out of town.

    Of course, the problem comes that we as animals ourselves don't really "shop around" on price for doctors - we stick with the one who knows us in the presumption that on the back of this we get better care. I know that when I go to my vets, Fishface gets good care, I am with the pet hospital which has good out of hours service and rates, and on his care, I don't think I would compromise on price.

    Having said that, we do buy our frontline flea drops on ebay for half the price of the vets.

    Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, Fishface is only his middle name.

    Hi

    Ring round and see if any vets in your area are taking part in the booster amnesty, lots in my area are and have been advertising in the paper, we had our 2 cats done for £10 each, usually £44 each! Available for dogs too.

    We didn't shop around for our first dog - she cost around £175 all in for spaying/vaccinations/worming/etc in the first year, but when we had our second we shopped around and found this group;

    They charge about 40% less than our local vet and have been excellent

    I just phoned another vet in my area, and she told me they take a "very dim view" of people moving their animals around, and the animal should stay with the same vet! the above link doesn't work, but probably haven't got one in our area.

    Sorry, I got the link wrong. I'm sure they do take a very dim view of people moving their pets round - it costs them money. If it isn't detrimental to their health, though, why shouldn't you? I take a dim view of paying more for a service than I need to :p

    I wouldn't shop around for actual treatment at a vets - I'd go by recomendation and how I felt the practice treated my pets.

    If my pet used special food or products such as shampoos or flea treatments that could only be bought from a vet, then yes, I'd probably ring round a couple to compare prices.

    There are big diffs in price where I live & also in treatments availible.
    The vet I go to now does cat flea jabs 6 monthly which are fab.

    We certainly "shopped around" and found a much cheaper vet a few miles away. We also prefer the way the new practice treat the animals too. Their premises may not be as shiny and modern as the local one, but we're happy that our pets are getting the best attention.
