When is the start date for Job B?

I would accept Job A - you can always change your mind if and when you are offered Job B but like you say you dont want to leave yourself without either :)

Your P45 can still be used up until about the middle of May so still hand it in - after that you are correct, a P46.

I wouldn't hesitate to accept job A and go to the 2nd interview for job B. Interviews are always good for you!

If you get job B, only then do you have a moral dilemma. But this is business - take job B at that point if you want it! This is good business practice, honest!

there is always the possibility of phoning Job A and saying you're really sorry you haven't been able to reach a decision yet, you understand that they need your response, but could you possibly have a few more days. You can either be honest and say you've got another job interview next week - I've held a job open in this way - or if you don't think that will wash, perhaps there's been a temporary family crisis ;) which has made it difficult for you to give it proper consideration, and you don't want to mess them around by saying yes if you then decide it's not the job for you.

It was my understanding that it's always the P45 you hand in and it's valid indefinitely. The P46 is for your information (eg filling out tax forms) and shows all your income at the end of the tax year. However, you won't get one if you weren't on the books on 5/6 April. In that case, your portion of the P45 has all the information you need. A P46, showing your income in a PREVIOUS tax year, is of no use to a new employer. Whereas a P45 from a previous tax year implies you've had no earnings and tax this year--information that is used.

    You're confusing a P46 and a P60, I think.

I wasn't aware of what tigtag said (that a P45 was valid until the middle of May if you only have one for the current tax year). My understanding was that if a new employee did not have a P45 for the current tax year you'd ask them to complete a P46. A P46 asks for your current status: there's a box you fill in to say "This is my only or main job." If you tick that box, you get your full personal tax allowance applied in the new job.

Using an 'old' P45 doesn't allow you to declare if it's NOT your only or main job ...

    To recap:

A P45 - given to every employee on leaving any employment, states their earnings to date for the tax year, and what's been deducted in that employment (or possibly throughout the year if it wasn't the first job you had that tax year). Only useful for a limited period.

A P46 - given to every NEW employee who does not have a P45 to hand in or - I think - a P45 for the current tax year. Finds out your current employment status (and also whether you're due to start paying a student loan back ...)

A P60 - given to every employee who is working for an employer at the end of the tax year. States your earnings and tax for the tax year just finished. Useful for checking whether you've overpaid your tax, AND for tax credits etc. Valid for ever ... although probably only useful for the 6 or 7 years following, during which you can reclaim tax. You should get one for EVERY job you're employed in at the end of a tax year, ie if you stopped work in Feb, you don't get one for that job because the information is on your P45, but if you have two or three jobs, you should get one for each job.

    Thanks Savvy_Sue, I did confuse P46 with P60.

It was my understanding that you were obliged to give in an old P45, preferably to your new employer but alternatively to the Revenue to make special arrangements if you wanted the details on it kept secret from your new employer. So when handing in a P45 you are necessarily starting your only job. Thus a circumstances declaration would only be needed if you don't have a P45. P46 then allows the Revenue to classify the situation as new entrant to the labour market, starting a second job, non-arrival of P45, loss, etc.

If you filled in P46 because you couldn't find your P45 or it hadn't yet been produced, the Revenue would reject your old P45 as invalid if you used it for a second job after it turned up.

    Just to clarify:

If you handed in a P45 from the previous tax year up until approx the middle of May (as I stated earlier) figures from that P45 would NOT be used - it would be for tax code purposes only and then only if it only just crossed tax years.

IE - if the P45 was from Nov - I wouldn't use it!!
If the P45 was from March and the employee was on tax code 503L - I would not use the figures and place them on a 522L.

Its prety descresionary (sp?) really and I hope I'm making sense :rotfl:

Yup, that makes perfect sense now ...

when I was doing payroll, I always just got the book out and looked at what it said there. Then I did whatever it said. Now I'm not doing payroll any more, but I still find a basic knowledge of how it works a GREAT help!
