If the Judge makes a fuss just sack him/her with a plastic bag, put the Judge in the storage room while you carry on taking pleasure sentencing the suspect in absence of a judge! Isn't that amazing?!

    Wit I say. Wit.

    Oh grow up!

And most of all, if it's a criminal case, you get to take part voting to sentence the suspect to prison! ....!

It almost certainly will be a criminal case. The use of juries in civil trials is very limited these days. And the jury only decide on the guilt of the accused; it's the judge that does the sentencing.
  • Nothing to do with the money-side of jury service but make sure you take something to read or do as it can honestly be the most boring thing ever if you are not selected for a case. Being in court is really interesting (personally wouldnt have liked a bad or high profile case) but the sitting around for hours in the same room- not so interesting. x

I did jury service last year, they gave us a pre-paid card for lunch every day in the canteen, can't remember how much it was but enough for lunch and coffees.

Keep all your travel cards and if you're in London don't use Oyster cards as they need to see exactly how much you have paid for your travel.

Every day we would complete our time sheets and put the cost of the travel on the form and at the end of the 2 weeks handed in the form with our travel cards and they reimbursed us quite quickly.

    People were dressed very casually.

    I'm sure you'll enjoy it, don't complain! ;)

Look at it like this, you have a duty as a member of society to take part in the justice system when your presence is requested, it's not much, it doesn't cost you anything (as the court pays back lost wages & expenses) and ultimately shouldn't be seen as a bad thing.

They cover lost wages to a limit, its a massive pain if your contracting and get called up, last time I was called up for JS i was on £250 per day so it would have come with a cost to me I think the maximum you could have claimed was £32 a day. Thankfully I was needed for a mega urgent meeting abroad so didnt have to attend.

Have you seen this page with financial details about jury service? https://www.gov.uk/jury-service/what-you-can-claim

If you are not called for a day or weekend you are able to go to work. Have a word with your employers. If you aren't too tired you might even be able to do some work in the evenings.

Don't worry about Jury services, chances are you will be dismissed rather than asked to serve, so will probably only be there for a morning or two. If you are selected to serve, you will get your wages and expenses covered, and basically you are either hanging around a lot (take a book) or doing something really interesting (being part of a trial). So you are either getting paid for doing something interesting or getting paid for doing very little.
  • Awww, bless you! I had to do it last Christmas (I missed 2 work's christmas parties, I wasn't too chuffed about that!) They pay up really quickly, so don't worry about that, just keep all of your receipts.

It was really nice to see some of the youngsters there, most of the jurors were old farts like me, but I remember the teens we had in our team did bring something valuable to the whole thing. Look upon this as a life experience, you never know you might even enjoy it!

  • Just seen Gibson123's comment, absolutely make sure you take something to do. I was lucky, I got two really meaty cases which lasted a week each, but there were lots of people there who were just hanging around all day waiting to be called.

I must say I found the whole experience quite exhausting, and a bit depressing, as our days were quite long and involved, but I felt happy to be doing something different, and I found the whole court process really interesting.

Certainly don't worry about clothes. They need to be neat & clean, to show that you take this seriously, that is all.
