University fees and refund?

Hello everyone.
I am new to this forum and i must stress that you have done an excellent work.
In 2008 October i registered to the university of Leceister as a distance learning student (I live in Greece) for an M.B.A Course.
I fully paid my tuition fees during the first 1 and a half year of the course but i Failed to complete the course (submit essays and sit on examinations) during the deadline (December 2012), so i requested for a one year extension in order to complete my studies.
As stated in the students handbook, students may be entitled to an extension for mitigating circumstances.
I supplied all medical documents (my fiancee had cervical cancer, my mother was diagnosed with epilepsy and my grandfather died), which i should have submitted earlier on, and which proove that during the past two years (2011,2012) i was no phsycologically well to antend classes and exams.
The board of examiners said in sort that it these reasons are not good enough and kick me out of the course.
They are only giving me an opportunity to appeal.
Is there anything i can do?
Can i claim my money back (11.000 euro)?
Any help, any opinion would be greatly appreciated.
