Unerpiad Tax - Rights

Just got a HMRC claim, saying that I underpaid tax year 2010/11. During this year and the previous one I wrote 15 letters to various HMRC offices and made two visits to my local office to try and resolve queries.

In Oct 2010. I wrote and told them that I was going to over pay tax that year, gave them the current situation and an accurate forecast. They issued me with a new notice of coding in January 2011, which I took to be correct, but evidently they got it wrong which resulted in and underpayment.

I advised them the correct info, they screwed it, and took them nearly two years to find the error, so do I have a case to refuse to pay this?

  • Not sure! Just because an error was caused does not mean you should not have to repay any tax you were due to pay.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
