Sudafed Muscus v Ibuprofen for Sinus

Hi

I have a sinus infection induced by a viral infection so doctor is not giving me antibiotics. I have been taking Sudafed for a few days as my ear is blocked/pressured due to the sinus and it hasnt made much difference. Would ibuprofen be better? Other symptoms i had earlier in the week like fever/sore throat have gone down its now just a cold and ear problem.

thanks

I don't think we can give medical advice, so sorry if the mods delete this, I am just saying what I do with OTC stuff.

I suffer with sinus problems which lead to a blocked eustachian tube in the ear, causes muffled hearing.

I use Otrivine nasal spray for no more than three days, it can rebound and make the problem worse if you take for longer.

Immediately after taking the spray, I hold my nose and blow, like you do on a plane to unblock your ears. It works, but you have to do this a few times a day, but only take the spray as advised.

And this is my all time remedy For blocked sinuses.... It doesn't sound very pleasant but it works for me ..

Get some lukewarm water and add salt. Mix together and try and get the mixture into your cupped hands, and then snort it up into your nose. It will make your eyes water and the tast of salt is yuk, but the relief it gives me is great.

I have very sympathy for sinus sufferers. It is such an underrated condition that can make you really miserable. But you look ABSOLUTELY fine!!
  • buy and use a neti pot, very easy to use and will clear your sinuses
  • As above; after numerous rounds of antibiotics, ENT referrals and CT scans I was sent away with a piece of paper with 'sinurinse' on it!

It's like a neti pot, a squeezy bottle in which you mix preboiled and cooled water and a salt mix you buy in sachets. You gently squeeze and it goes up one nostril and down and out the other. Yes it's disgusting, but it relieves the blocked feeling and can help flush out bacteria etc before it gets a chance to develop at the back of your nose/throat.

You can get the sets in larger Boots these days, and it costs about £10.

On medication, I always found sinutab worked for me more than sudafed, and ibuprofen and warm compresses can soothe the pain.
