State Retirement age

Went into the Halifax today to get a mortgage in principle, was told I can only have a mortgage to go up to 65, even though I will have to work longer to get a state pension, they said I would need to get a letter from my employer to confirm that I will be able to work beyond 65, I said I wouldn't do this as I am obliged to work beyond 65, I duly walked out the office, 5 minutes later the guy from the Halifax called me back and said it would be ok as I am office based. Anyone heard of this before?

    Requirement for a letter?

Its a fact that around a 1/3 of people suffer a health impairment which impacts their ability to work after the age of 65.

So your occupation may well have a bearing.

So why make it 65? surely its remnant of the previous retirement age/ and if I am legally obliged to work up to the age of 66 then my employers wouldn't need to confirm this, there are younger guys who will be required to work to the age of 67/68. Also Santander also take the official retirement as the date that one can work up to without question.

Retirement age isn't the same as State Pension Age.

Retirement age is when an employee decides to retire. However some employers can set a compulsory retirement age if they can justify it.
