christmas table will be a squeeze - any tips?

  • In Jamie Oliver's Italian restaurants they make the most of limited table space by putting a couple of bricks on the table with a narrow (approx 15cm) wooden board on the bricks. Makes a "bridge" - larger serving dishes can fit on the table under the bridge and smaller ones sit on top of it.

If money's no object, you can buy a posh version (google "Jamie Oliver antipasti platter"), but I'm sure the bricks/board arrangement could be prettied up for your festive table!

Good suggestion :) In the Jamies we have been to they have used tins of tomatoes instead of bricks but same idea - large tins may be easier to decorate to look Christmassy too (just write on the bottom what is in them so you can eat them later).

I use 3 pieces of wood in a bridge shape that way they don't take up room underneath the bridge . One piece of mdf with the ends cut off works well . Glued on and a couple of screws. Covered with a table runner. :-)

The bridge thing is a great idea! Will remember that one! Also, we tend to carve the meat in e kitchen and add that to the plates and just bring a couple of serving dishes with the veg and stuffing through to the dining room. And two gravy boats, one at either end.

I serve the starters and desserts on the table, but for the main course, people come into the kitchen, i serve them, then they take their plate into dining room.
  • I love the bridge idea, I think this year I might have to do a seperate table for my dd's, as our dining table is tiny & last year with 4 adults & 2 kids it was a nightmare! Im going to use little ones plastic table, pop a table cloth on it, some confetti, make it look special so they dont feel pushed out... hopefully!
