I'm thinking about dyeing an old, fading skirt of mine using some Dylon, but I am confused about how many packets of dye will be needed. I was hoping to get away with just a fairly cheap hand-wash dye? The colour wouldn't need to be 'perfect', - I just want to make the faded areas look darker again and maybe get a bit more life out of the skirt before I am forced to bin it!
I guess I'm trying to gauge whether it's worth going to the expense of dyeing it or whether it might just be better to look out for another skirt on EBay

The most important thing is what it's made of. If it's wholly or mostly cotton (80%+) it's worth dying. If it's mostly man made fibres it's not worth it. Cotton will dye darker the more dye you use so one packet of hand dye ought to give you some change of colour. just make sure you keep stirring it to get even coverage.0

Thanks. It's a corduroy skirt, so either 100% cotton or a very high percentage of cotton in it.0

I normally use the whole packet even if for one garment. I dont bother halving the amount and halving the amount of salt0

You need to weigh the skirt then go by the recommendation on the back of the pack. I think though that unless it's a short fitted skirt in a small size you'll need more than one of these wee tins of dye, you'd need a box size packet. If you have more dye than needed by weight you can always overdye a faded t-shirt too!
If you overdye using the same colour ie black on a black skirt then the faded patches should merge back in. If you're trying to overdye a different colour ie green over a faded beige skirt then the result will be patchy, unfortunately.Val.0 -
I wouldn't use the little tins of dye for a skirt. Get the machine dye in the box it will work fine. It is much less mess than poking arround with a bucket and the result will be better.
You will only need one box of dye for one item - I have dyed 3 bath sheets with one box and they came out fine.0 -
thanks all
It weighs 320g. I'd be looking to dye it a dark brown. The colour of the skirt is dark brown already, but it is starting to fade a bit on the back.
