Rbs unauthorised overdraft

Options
Hello, posting for my OH, she has checked her account this morning, and they have taken £48 in unauthorised overdraft fees. This was in relation to being £6 overdrawn for a few days when she was having a baby. She rang them and asked why she had received no letter explaining when these charges are payable. Their reply is that it should be on your statement. My OH has been trying to he statements for the past year and they won't provide her with any as they say she has online banking with them. So in this case how the hell do they expect her to know when the charges are to be taken. Needless to say this has left her overdrawn again and short of money. Are rbs allowed to take charges without notifying a customer?

  • Simple answer, yes. It's in the T&Cs when you open an account. I've fallen foul of this myself.

Try going in branch and explaining mitigating circumstances? Chances are they won't care why she was overdrawn though, just that she was.

Why can't she get onto her online banking? She should still be able to get a printout from the counter in-branch too.

Your OH will more then likely have been notified by a message through her internet banking. Quite often, if you don't receive paper statements, you don't receive printed charges notification either. Get her to check, you'll probably find notification of when they were to be applied on there.
  • If your oh has agreed to online statements, then an advisory email is sent each month stating your monthly statement is available to view/download etc. It also states on this email that included in your statement will be any charges due to your account. If the online statements weren't checked but RBS sent this email then they have notified charges will be taken.
Also, if it genuinely is only £6 overdrawn which caused these charges then your branch should waiver the charge for being overdrawn on such a small amount, provided you have never incurred unauthorised overdraft charges before.
May I also suggest requesting an overdraft of even just £20 to ensure you aren't charged for going overdrawn by minimal amounts?

I had one once due to rbs putting a debit instead of credit, they sent a letter out.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • I have fallen foul of this too .... online statements & being advised that a charge was going to be taken off my account and I hadn't looked at the statement.

In the T&Cs and nothing you can do about it unfortunately.
