Missing House Deeds

Hi, we have very recently paid off our mortgage and I have just contacted Nat West for the Deeds.
However, they claim that they have never held the Deeds and that they would probably be with the solicitor or the last Building Society that we had a mortgage with.
What's the easiest way of tracking these down please?
