PPI Loan Insurance

I have been in touch with the Halifax regarding cancelling the insurance on my loan. After a lot of messing around i took the advice of this site and insisted that they cancel my insurance without me having to take out a new loan. The loan started in May 2005.
I have just had conformation this morning that they are willing to let me cancel the insurance without taking out a new loan. yippee
However, having read many stories i have realised that some people that have been allowed to cancel have had all payments returned to them if they have not claimed.
One month after taking out this insurance i went self employed so it didn't cover me anyway. I am entitled to claim this back
Please can someone help me.
