Camper Van

Don't know if this is the right place...but here goes
My hubby has lost his room for when he works away down south, which is usually a couple of days once a fortnight but has been known to be longer.
Rather than rent a room we've decided to replace his golf and buy a camper van..kill two birds with one stone.
Looked on loads of websites and there are loads of vans..but not in our budget.
So was wondering if anyone out there has one????

My wife and I have a Bambi - its a motor home based on the bedford rascal van. They are a reasonable price (£2500-£4000 depending on condition) and ample size for two people (and our belgian shepherd Fern)
If you go to this site BAMBI OWNERS CLUB and check out the forum there is a 'for sale' section with up to 8 Bambis for sale.
If you buy one - you'll get hooked!Mr. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news immediately0 -
By the way - the guy running the bambi site is very friendly and would be pleased to give you any help or advice.Mr. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news immediately0

Thanks humph,
Hubby has his heart set on a VW camper van. Old enough to be tax exempt. Preferably a split screen but they are looking way too over budget so he'll settle for a bay front.0 -
There used to be an informal combi market in Market Rd, Islington every Sat and Sun morning. Not sure if it's still going, I haven't been for years since I sold mine there.
Used to be loads of combis parked up along the road being sold by aussie and kiwi travellers before they fly home. You could look around the vans and negotiate a deal there and then. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

i doubt you could find a vw splitty under £10k, unless you are looking for a knacked one that needs totally rebuilding
might be able to pick up a driveable bay style, for around £4k mark - although winter is usually the best time find one, as people are trying to off load them, after using them the previous summer - gonna be like golddust at the mo, what with festival season coming up
another thing to think about is travelling time too - an old vw camper is gonna have a top speed of 50mph (downhill), drink like a fish, and cost loads to maintain
prob get more for your money with a T25 or T4, but they just dont have the cred really0 -
Try the chat forums on https://www.justkampers.co.uk for all V.W. campers or https://www.club80-90.co.uk for T25s.0

Another superb and friendly car site is Honest John and if you registered and asked this question in The Back Room you might get some more helpful ideas.Signature removed for peace of mind0

There are plenty for sale here at volkszone it's a vw forum so the prices don't tend to be over inflated. We got our out of the yellow ads newspaper so might be worth a look on the adtrader website. i can't imagine you could get a splitty for that money that would be driveable, but i'm sure that you will find a few bays. A good point is that the insurance is amazingly cheap if you get it on a classic car policy but check that the mileage restriction isn't too low. Also very much worth taking out 'agreed value' insurance - which didn't cost us any more.
I hope that you manage to find onw - they are lovely vehicles to own and although they do take time effort and money to keep them on the road i don't know many people that regret buying one.
Good luck!
Also have a look on the volkszone forum to find out what to look for when you go to view one - the general opinion is that it is much cheaper to fix the inside than it is to fix the outside so look for a solid van rather than a perfect camping interior. They do all rust in certain places but you will find much more details on that website. Friendly people - ask loads of questions and there will be plenty of knowledgeable people to offer advice!0
