Soot Sponge: Do I need one?!

I had an accident while being OS with some candles and there is now a slight black smudge where I have attempted to damp wipe the wall with a hint of water and washup liquid. I don't care but OH does and its a rented house.
I found a special chemical soot sponge on a*zon for 5.99:eek: but this seems a ridiculous price for something I will only use once. I remember somewhere on MSE people were mentioning eraser blocks: are they the same as soot sponges, would they work and where can I get them from for peanuts?
Thanks loads in advance OSers, KCF x

I live in a rented house and the magic erasers are brilliant - I always go round with one when we move out and they get rid of so many scuffs and marks it's unbelievable. They're great too on skirting boards and window frames.0

yup, if its painted then the magic eraser will remove almost anything from it! and it works on unvarnished wood too! OH went nuts when the grandkids decided to do 'art' on the dining table! even tho it had dried the magic sponge got it all off no prob! even permanent marker!0
