Big gap in employment history

Me and my partner are just starting to think about moving and looking into mortgages for the first time. We already own a house but we both have gaps of many years in our employment history.
Would this completely ruin our chances of being accepted for a mortgage?
Thanks

The important issue will be how long you've been in your current jobs, although there are one or two lenders who will lend before you start, or are in a probationary period. The most a lender will ask for is a three year employment history.

Thank you for your reply.
The current situation is that neither of us are working, but the plan is, once we have both found work, to look into moving and mortgages. Although ideally wouldn't want to have to wait 3 years or so until we are settled into employment before applying for a mortgage.0
