What exactly does your hubbys life insurance cover? assuming he's the one earning £225 a month minus his insurance payments? Does it cover the mortgage or just pay out should the worst happen. I would be going over the small print with a toothcomb for that much a month.

Hi Tallyho, do you know I have never read the small print, half my problem with things, his is 92 a month, will check that out, am a bit frightened of moving it in case i loose any benefit from the one he already has, don't really know how moving insurance works, is it the same as electric etc. Will def have a look tomorrow, too late now I'll be up all night.
Went to xmas fair, was a bit of a disappointment, got there late and the choir had finished, still the mulled wine cheered me up, didn't manage to keep my £20 note, but didn't buy anything else.
    Night night everyone

Have a busy weekend at work this weekend, doing overtime so won't have time to go into changing everything. Spent 1.90 on grandsons dinner money but have looked into free school dinners, am waiting for a reply, here's hoping. Going to have a cup of tea and then get ready for work, have a good day everyone

Your income figures seem really strange to me. Are you or DH on part-time work? Are you getting minimum wage. I assume the third adult in the house is your daughter. How much does she contribute? Does she work? Could she contribute more? Are you entitled to any grants from Social Services for being guardians of your grandson. I must echo others though and say that it is the mortgage that is crippling you. It is impossible to pay 65% of income on a mortgage. Even if this includes extra for paying missed payments earlier it is still far too much and they should negotiate on this. What interest rate are you paying?

thanks harry's dad for replying, we don't get any money for our grandson, only £20 a week (as and when) from his dad. My daughter does live with us she pays £250 a month and helps a lot with food and taking my grandson out and taking care of him when me and my husband are at work, she has quite a lot of outgoings and I don';t want to ask for any more as she is under quite a lot of stress and due to our circumstances (i'm not really ready to talk about that yet, sorry) I don't want to put any pressure on her. My husband and I work part time and get tax credits and child tax credits i do quite a lot of overtime at the moment, but to me the mortgage is the most important, I must keep this house, and we don't buy clothes or anything for ourselves, not that that bothers us, It will take about another year and a half for the mortgage repayments to come down to about 950 a month, we only have about 8 years left but we are getting on a bit so don't think we would be able to extend that and don't really want to. I think i need to get christmas over to really get down to serious money managing, but will look up all the comparison sites to see what is on offer. I don't no the interest rate on the mortgage another thing on my list.

Do you have a spare bedroom you might rent out to a carefully selected lodger for some extra income?
